GARMIN VIVOACTIVE 3 GPS vs GLONASS


Yesterday, I went on a run along the Chicago Riverwalk, a veritable GPS torture test, using the Garmin Vivoactive 3 in GPS Only. Today, I turn on GPS+GLONASS and run the same route again. The results are surprising.
Also, I explore the Garmin GPS watch setting that changes the frequency of data recording from Smart Recording to 1 second.

GPS
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S. owned satellite navigation system. It provides users with the following services:
Positioning
Navigation
Timing
It is made up of three components which are:
The space segment
The control segment
The user segment
The U.S. Air Force is responsible for the development, maintenance and operations of the space and control segments.
GPS Satellites orbit the earth in a medium earth orbit at an altitude of 20200 km with each satellite completing 2 orbits per day
GLONASS
GLONASS is an acronym for Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema which translates to Global Navigation Satellite System.

The uses of GLONASS are pretty much the same as those of GPS and it also consists of a space, control and user segment. GLONASS, however, is Russian owned and operated.
GLONASS satellites orbit Earth at an altitude of 19100 km and also complete about 2 orbits of the earth per day.
Differences
You will notice that I did not mention the number of satellites that are part of the GLONASS fleet. Don’t panic, I simply wanted to save that for this section because that’s one of the things that makes GLONASS different from GPS in addition to their countries of origin.
There are 24 operational GLONASS satellites which operate in 3 orbital planes. There are 8 satellite slots per orbital plane.
In addition to these 2 differences there are 2 others which can be considered the most major ones. Firstly the signal from GPS and GLONASS satellites are different from each other. Their structures are different and while GPS uses codedivision channeling, GLONASS uses frequencydivision channeling.
